UN rights body to hold urgent meeting on Haiti

The U.N. says its top human rights body will hold an urgent meeting Wednesday on Haiti.The U.N. said Monday that the special session of the Human Rights Council was requested by Brazil and is supported by 32 of the body’s 47 members.

The Geneva-based council has previously held urgent meetings following the cyclone that hit Myanmar in 2008 and conflicts in Lebanon, Darfur, Congo and the Palestinian territories.

Since its creation in 2006, it has also convened special sessions on global hunger and the impact of the financial crisis on human rights.
