Death Threats for Haitian Human Rights Attorney

MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2012

Mario Joseph, who the New York Times calls “Haiti’s most prominent human rights lawyer,” has begun speaking out about escalating death threats he’s received over the past year. Joseph says the threats stem from his work defending victims of former dictator Jean Claude Duvalier, earthquake survivors evicted from tent camps and a complaint against the U.N. calling for justice for victims of cholera, a disease introduced in Haiti by United Nations troops. Judith Scherr spoke to Joseph during his recent visit to the San Francisco Bay Area.
