Half-Hour for Haiti: Celebrate, then Write

April 19, 2007 Update: Thanks to everyone who wrote and called last week in support of Temporary Protective Status for Haitians in the U.S. Six more legislators have signed on as co-sponsors in the last week, for a total of 30, a small victory. So far no changes in the status of the 101 refugees who made it to shore, or their supporters who are engaged in a hunger strike (for more, see our Haitian Refugees Land in Florida section). We had a bigger victory on the political prisoner front. After 11 months, the Gonaives Appeals Court released its decision in the La Scierie case last Friday. The Court dismissed the charges against five defendants, including former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune and former Minister of the Interior Jocelerme Privert. The five were all government employees at the time of the […]

Half-Hour for Haiti: Fairness for Haitians in the U.S.

April 12, 2007 Update: Grassroots journalist Wadner Pierre only has a borrowed, inexpensive, point-and-shoot camera, but his photographs have made it onto several websites, magazines and newspapers because they convey the political and social reality of Haitis poor directly to us. Canadian photographer Darren Ell spent several weeks working with Wadner in Haiti, and was so impressed with his natural ability and willingness to learn that he set up a website to sell Wadners photos so he can buy a professional camera and bring us even better photographs. Click here to see and purchase photographs. Thanks to a generous donors gift, IJDH is hiring a part-time fundraiser. For more information, see the job announcement on our website, and please pass the word to anyone who might be interested! Half-Hour for Haiti: Pictures Worth Thousands of Words

April 5, 2007 Update: Thanks to everyone who contacted their member of Congress about the Haiti Debt Cancellation Resolution. Many of you reported your Member has agreed to sign on (often without needing much persuading). That progress is not yet reflected in the official co-sponsor list, which now stands at nine. That might be because the House is on recess this week. The recess, which extends until April 16, is an excellent time to reach your Representative in the district office or at community meetings. So unless you have a firm commitment to co-sponsor H.Res. 241, please keep asking. For details, see last weeks alert, for advocacy tools see our Haiti Debt Relief Activist Toolbox. Coming Attractions: The Latin America Solidarity Coalition Conference in Chicago, April 13-15, will include several Haiti activities, including workshops on bringing Haiti into the mainstream […]

Half-Hour for Haiti: How Are We Doing?

March 20, 2007 Update: Thanks to everyone who urged the U.S. Congress to break the chains of Haitis Debt. Over the weekend, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) took a step in the right direction by announcing $423 million in debt relief for Haiti, eventually. This is a step in the right direction, but it will take too much time, during which too many Haitian kids will die of preventable diseases. Thats why the Haiti Debt Relief Bill, which calls for immediate, unconditional debt cancellation, is so important. For more, click here. Coming Attractions: Haitian human rights lawyer Mario Joseph and IJDHs Brian Concannon will speak in Minneapolis on March 22, and in Milwaukee on March 24. Also on March 24 in Milwaukee, Mario and Brian will join Loune Viaud of Partners In Health (PIH), Monika Kalra Varma of the RFK […]

Response of the BAI to Interrogation of Mr. Evens Jeune (press release)

BUREAU DES AVOCATS INTERNATIONAUX B.P. 19048 3, 2me rue Lavaud, Port-au-Prince, Haiti 244-7987/244-7988/244-7989 Fax 244-7986 Email: BAIs response after the questioning of Evens Jeune   The Jeunes this past Tuesday, March 13, in les Cayes, as well as of his appearance on Thursday, March 15, before Justice of the Peace Me. Gabriel Ambroise, under the direction of the Office of the Prosecutor of the Trial Court of Port-au-Prince. The BAI seizes this occasion to denounce, before national and international public opinion, that despite the judicial authorities scrupulous respect for the time-limit for appearance at the initial hearing (48 hours) observed by the judicial, the initial questioning of Evens Jeune without the presence of a lawyer was illegal and arbitrary, and contrary to the relevant laws. That is why, the suffering the deprivation of his basic rights, regardless of […]
