Declaration of American Association of Jurists expressing concern over recent threats, harassment and intimidation against attorneys in Haiti

The American Association of Jurists (AAJ), a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the United Nations, expresses its deep concern over the recent intimidation of Haitian attorneys who represent government critics, victims of human rights violations, and displaced persons, which has included continuous death threats, judicial harassment, and a report that Haiti’s top justice official ordered the arrest of three attorneys. The arrest orders came to light last week when Jean-Renel Senatus, the former chief prosecutor of Port-au-Prince, reported that he was fired by Minister of Justice Jean-Renel Sanon for refusing to illegally arrest 36 political opponents. Among those targeted were lawyers Newton St. Juste, Andre Michel, who have filed corruption claims against the family of President Michel Martelly, and Mario Joseph, a prominent human rights lawyer.
