Our View: Help Haiti help itself

Appeal Democrat Californians, especially, contributed to Haiti relief after the Jan. 12 earthquake killed an estimated 250,000 people and leveled much of the capital, Port-Au-Prince. We have our own deadly temblors, and we live knowing that one day a “Big One” will strike us. As relief efforts have continued in Haiti, criticism has arisen that United Nations funds have not been spent properly. “The United Nations has quietly upped this year’s peacekeeping budget for earthquake-shattered Haiti to $732.4 million, with two-thirds of that amount going for the salary, perks and upkeep of its own personnel, not residents of the devastated island,” Fox News reported April 20.
