Haitian-Dominican Activist, Sonia Pierre, Dies at 48

Defend Haiti December 4, 2011 SAN CRISTOBAL, Dominican Republic – Sonia Pierre, 48, an activist since the age of 13 when she was arrested for defending the rights of Haitians and their children in the Dominican Republic, has died today by heart attack. Pierre’s doctor, Edwin Ferreira, told the AFA that she had a heart attack at her farm home. She was taken to Villa Altagracia public hospital, where she was pronounced dead, said Ferreira, who is coordinating with the family of the deceased her funeral to be held after Pierre undergoes an autopsy. The doctor said she died “in a family atmosphere” in his remarks to the AFA. Haiti: French Ambassador Refuses to Shake Duvalier’s Hand

Defend.ht June 25, 2012 PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) – The French Ambassador to Haiti, Didier Le Bret, made headlines this weekend for refusing to shake the hand of the former President-for-Life, Jean-Claude Duvalier, at an anniversary celebration for one of Haiti’s prestigious schools. “Baby Doc” Duvalier, who spent 25 years in exile living in France, attended the 122nd anniversary of the Brothers of Christian Instruction Saint Louis de Gonzague ceremony, while supposedly on house arrest since returning to Haiti in 2011. It is at this event that History Teacher Josue Agenor Cadet witnessed the snubbing of Duvalier. Cadet says that the diplomat, Le Bret, did not simply react negatively to the request of Duvalier to shake his hand, but removed himself completely to find another place away from the former president. Haiti: United Nations Mission Denounced by Human Rights Organization (Defend.ht)

By: Defend.ht PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) – On December 14, 2011, the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH) received in its office, a complaint alleging an incident in which three (3) Haitian citizens were brutally beaten by officers of the Mission United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Given the gravity of the facts advanced by the above individuals and the many different injuries and bruises seen on the body of the latter, the RNDDH decided to undertake an investigation in order to learn more about the incident.
