Protests and unrest continue as opposition candidates dispute first round results

Opposition candidates from Haiti’s presidential elections are threatening  to force Haiti into a transition government unless changes are made for a runoff in December. Candidates who oppose the latest results have dubbed themselves the “G8” and do not believe fair elections are a possibility under the Martelly regime. Haitian Bishops and Pastors Join Calls for Election Inquiry

Ever since Haiti’s Electoral Council (CEP) released preliminary results of the first round presidential elections, there has been a standoff between many of the candidates (and their supporters) and the CEP. Many believe that the results should be overturned and an independent investigation launched because of the fraud and other irregularities so far in these elections. The CEP says that it doesn’t have the authority to launch a commission to investigate. There have been constant protests in the streets met with repression by Haitian police forces and now, a group of pastors and Catholic bishops have joined the calls for an investigation as well.
