With the August 5, 2026 cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, 350,000 people who were living and working legally in the US on August 4 have now lost their work authorization and jobs. They face increasing arrests and demeaning treatment by ICE, and deportation to horrifically dangerous conditions in Haiti. The Administration’s decision to cancel TPS for Haitians – and the Supreme Court’s ruling to allow it – is cruel, inhumane, and racist; will cause widespread suffering and even death; and undermines the American rule of law that protects us all. US-born children will be separated from their parents; TPS holders face widespread displacement, hunger, and violence in Haiti; and all American communities – especially those that depend on Haitian TPS holders working in healthcare, elder care, hospitality, and agriculture – will suffer without TPS holders’ critical contribution to the economy. However, there is some good news: YOU have the power to change this!

Across the country, communities are standing up for the rights of their Haitian neighbors, friends, classmates, coworkers, and fellow parishioners. In April, the movement to support Haitian TPS convinced the House of Representatives to pass H.R. 1689, a bill to extend Haitian TPS for three years, with bipartisan support. 

Now, the bill is in the Senate as S. 4814, championed by Sen. Markey and Sen. Blunt-Rochester. It currently has over 30 co-sponsors and Senators from both parties are feeling the pressure from us to step up and defend justice and human rights. We need you to keep it up to get more co-sponsors and force a vote! Here are a few ways you can help:

Action 1: Call Up! 

Join our TPS Tuesday Virtual Phone Banks: Weekly, Tuesday 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST/9:00 – 11:00 AM PST on Zoom! Or, to make calls at any time: 

1. Check if your Senator(s) have not co-sponsored (here). If they have not, call them!!
2. Dial the Capitol Hill switchboard, (202) 224-3121, and ask to be connected to your Senator. 
3. When you are connected, say, “Hello, my name is ______, I live in [city/zip code]. I am calling to urge Senator ______ to co-sponsor Senate Bill 4814 to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haiti. This is an emergency, as 360,000 Haitians have lost work authorizations and now face arrest and deportation to horrifying, deadly conditions in Haiti.”
   1. If appropriate, remind your Senator that your other Senator, Attorney General, and/or mayor has already stepped up, and thank them for their consideration.

Action 2: Show Up!

With your local community, faith, solidarity, labor, really any other kind of group, ask for a meeting with your Senator or their staff.  Even if you do not obtain a meeting, the request will still demonstrate that constituents care about Haitians with TPS, and busy offices may even co-sponsor to avoid a meeting. If you do obtain a meeting, IJDH would be happy to provide talking points and advice.

Action 3: Sign Up!

• Please share with your network and recruit family and friends to make calls with you, especially those in states with Senators who haven’t co-sponsored.
